Jerry Haas doing his job as a siding installer on a Kansas City roof. A roofer was "horsing" around and filed a nail gun at Jerry's feet. The nail ricocheted and went through Jerry's eye. Fortunately for Jerry, he got to the ER immediately and after surgery, he was able to keep the eye even though it was permanently dilated and required cataract surgery (medical expenses were only $3500.00)

Cigna, the roofer's insurance company, made an initial offer, in writing, of $10,000.00 (no, we're not kidding...we still have the letter). Cain and Cain filed suit immediately, and a few days before trial the case was resolved for $350,000.00. Years later, in an almost unbelievably tragic event, a man threw a beer bottle at Jerry which broke and completely tore out the same eye! The man went to prison for 7 years. Cain and Cain got a $5 Million judgment against the man in Jackson County Circuit Court, and was able to collect an additional $30,000.00 from the Tort Victim's Compensation Fund.
